Job Description

Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineer: Biomedical Devices & Robotics (Part-Time and Full-Time available)

$50–$75/hour | Remote within the United States

Guanaco Labs LLC is seeking an engineer with strong mechanical design skills and hands-on project experience to help develop a compact automated blood collection and transfusion system for austere, prehospital, and emergency environments.

You will help turn system requirements into CAD assemblies, component selections, and documented engineering decisions. The work combines mechanisms, pumps, fluid handling, sensors, and electromechanical integration, with a direct connection to an important medical need.

This role is well suited to a mechanical or mechatronics engineer who enjoys figuring out how physical systems work and how to make them practical to build. Strong senior undergraduate and graduate students with substantial engineering projects are also encouraged to apply.

What you’ll work on

Your primary focus will be mechanical and electromechanical design for the Phase I conceptual design and feasibility effort. Working with our engineering lead and multidisciplinary team, you will:

  • Develop 3D CAD models and assemblies, including subsystem layouts, mounting concepts, and packaging.
  • Compare and select pumps, valves, tubing, actuators, sensors, and other components against size, weight, power, cost, and performance requirements.
  • Build and maintain bills of materials, research suppliers, and document cost estimates.
  • Develop mechanical and fluidic concepts and help define interfaces with electronics and controls.
  • Perform preliminary engineering calculations and trade studies, identifying assumptions, constraints, and unresolved risks.
  • Prepare clear design documentation and contribute to design reviews, manufacturing planning, and Phase II prototype planning.

Depending on your strengths, you may also contribute to electrical schematics, embedded hardware integration, simulation, or safety-interlock design.

Phase I emphasizes design, analysis, and feasibility. If Phase II funding is awarded, the program is expected to move into physical prototype fabrication, integration, and testing.

What makes someone a strong fit

We are looking for evidence that you can take a defined engineering problem, investigate options, develop a solution, and explain your decisions.

You should bring:

  • Strong CAD skills: Experience creating meaningful multi-part assemblies in Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or a comparable tool.
  • Relevant project experience: At least one substantial hardware project in which you personally designed, built, integrated, or tested something.
  • Sound engineering fundamentals: An understanding of mechanisms, materials, tolerances, physical constraints, and practical assembly considerations.
  • Independent execution: The ability to organize your work, make progress between reviews, document assumptions, and raise questions before they become blockers.
  • Clear communication: Design files and explanations that another engineer can understand and build on.

Relevant experience may come from employment, internships, research, senior design, robotics competitions, or independent projects. We care about the depth of your contribution and the quality of your reasoning.

Helpful additional experience

Experience with any of the following would be valuable:

  • Pumps, tubing, valves, microfluidics, or other fluid-handling systems.
  • Robotics, actuator design, or electromechanical mechanisms.
  • Medical devices or biomedical instrumentation.
  • Sensors, microcontrollers, motor control, or electrical schematics.
  • Design for manufacturing, rapid prototyping, or preliminary structural analysis.

We use Fusion 360 for mechanical CAD and KiCad for electrical design. Experience with comparable tools is welcome. AI/ML experience is optional.

How we work

You will own defined design tasks and bring recommendations to the team for review. We value initiative, careful reasoning, and early communication about uncertainty. System architecture, interfaces, and safety-related decisions will be reviewed with the engineering team.

  • Our team covers scientific, regulatory, software, and AI aspects of the program. This hire will strengthen our ability to translate those requirements into an integrated physical device.
